How You Can Live In Peace
We have been looking at various aspects of God’s peace the last few sessions. In fact, through it all, we were able to experience God’s peace, Shalom, as we were studying about it. Today we are going to learn how to live in God’s peace.
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)
A lot of times we face hardships, difficulties, restlessness and opposition but it is God’s peace that passes all understanding that helps us sleep soundly through the storm. This is the peace that guards our hearts and our minds. When we read through the Bible, we see a lot of God’s people going through life’s difficulties. Some of them were even tried by actual fire. But through it all, they had God’s peace. In fact, Job says that after all the trials, he will come out as refined gold (Job 23:10).
True peace is not circumstantial
God’s peace is not related to or bound by our circumstances. We are not anchored in the true peace of God if our peace wavers according to our circumstances. If you identify with this situation, believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that “The peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard my heart”.
Peace is the presence of Christ and not the absence of conflict.
The presence of Christ brings peace. Where Jesus is, there peace will be. Just because Jesus is there doesn’t mean there will be no problems. But it means that you can have a lot of problems or conflicts surrounding you but if Christ is there with you, you will be at peace.
Faith anchors peace in the storm.
We read about Jesus and His disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee and how they are met with a raging storm. The disciples feared that the boat would capsize any moment and that they would drown. But through all of this, we read of how Jesus was peacefully sleeping unaffected by the storm. He wakes up when the disciples go and wake Him up.
In another passage, we read of how Peter walks on the water towards Jesus. As long as his eyes were on Jesus, Peter walked on water but the moment he took his eyes off Jesus, he was overwhelmed by the storm around him and he started to drown.
When we accepted Jesus, we have already received the peace of God in our lives. We may not feel like we have the peace of God but as long as we have accepted Jesus, the peace of God is there in our hearts. We just have to activate it. We have to train ourselves by constantly reminding ourselves that we have the peace of God with us and so we don’t have to worry when things go wrong.
Let us look at some practical ways by which we can live in this peace
1. It is through the Holy Spirit that we receive this peace
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (ESV)
Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. When the Holy Spirit dwells in us, we have the peace of God.
2. By living in holiness
If we live a life that is pleasing to God, we will be filled with the peace of God. We will have peace like a river flowing through us.
Isaiah 32:17 The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever. (NIV)
Psalm 85:10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. (NIV)
Peace is a fruit of right living before God. Peace comes with righteousness. The lack of peace is caused due to sin. When we sin, we lose the peace of God. In the Bible, we read of how David loses his peace after sinning with Bathsheba. It is reflected in the psalms written by him after he had sinned; like Psalm 38. Like David, we may also fall into temptation and sin but when we do, we have to run back to God and repent and ask for forgiveness.
3. Putting your trust in God
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)
When we trust God, God’s peace will overflow in our lives.
4. Shift your perspective
Colossians 3:1-2 Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. (NIV)
If we are going to focus on the things here on Earth, we will lose our peace and feel overwhelmed. At the same time, if we turn our eyes to heaven and look at God and set our minds on heavenly things, we will have the peace of God. This shift in perspective is what fills us with peace.
God has already blessed us with His peace. When we follow the above-mentioned practical steps, we will be filled with His peace constantly.
Isaiah 66:12 For this is what the Lord says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried on her arm and dandled on her knees.” (NIV)
God will extend His peace to us like a river. Shalom!
