Dwelling In The House Of The Lord
Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.(NKJV)
Through the past few episodes we have been meditating on the Lord being our shepherd. So, in continuation, the portion of scripture for today’s meditation is from the second part of Psalms 23 and verse 6 that says “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
Written from the perspective of a shepherd, Psalm 23 gives us a beautiful analogy of how life is when the Lord is our shepherd. It involves Him leading us, meeting all our needs, guiding us and blessing us beyond measure. But verse 6 of the psalm shows us that the ultimate destination for each one of us is the house of the Lord. Each one of us will be spending our eternity in the house of the Lord.
The safest place for a sheep is the sheep pen or being in the presence of the shepherd. All the needs of the sheep will be taken care of, when the sheep is in this safe place.
For us this is the house of the Lord. It is the final point to which the psalm was leading towards. Our final home will be with Jesus forever. Our life does not end when we draw our last breath. It continues now for eternity in the shepherd’s home with the shepherd.
At the end of each day, the good shepherd gathers all his sheep towards himself into a safe place to protect them from dangers outside. They can rest safely in this place because they know that the shepherd is watching them. Likewise, heaven is our ultimate home. It is the place where we will be fully secure in God’s presence. A safe place where we will be safe from the enemy and the dangers of this world, be it natural or man-made.
John 14:2-3 “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go back and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (NIV)
In the above verse we see Jesus telling His disciples that He is going to His Father’s home to prepare a place for them and that He will come back and take them there. From this, we can understand that we will all be with Him in His presence when the time comes. Where the shepherd is, we also will be. God is going to tabernacle with His redeemed ones. He bought us with the precious blood of Jesus so that He can dwell with us. What a privilege!
Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (NIV)
The above verse in Revelation 17 shows us that Jesus will be our shepherd and He will lead us to springs of living water. Our final destination is eternity with Jesus. We will be spending our time with the Lamb who redeemed us with His precious blood. It will be a place of peace, joy, tranquillity and serenity with complete security in the presence of God.
In the Old Testament, we see God being the good shepherd to the Israelites. In the New Testament, God reveals Jesus to be our shepherd. He is the shepherd of our soul. Now, Jesus is not just any other shepherd but He holds three distinguishable titles as a shepherd.
The three distinguishable titles of Jesus as a shepherd are:
1. He is the Good Shepherd
John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (NIV)
Jesus didn’t just call Himself a good shepherd in the passing but He demonstrated it by laying down His life to redeem the sheep by His blood. We see a confirmation of this in 1 Peter 1:18
1 Peter 1:18-19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. (NIV)
We were bought with the most priceless thing that God could offer which is the blood of Jesus Christ. We are precious.
2. He is the Great Shepherd
There is only one great shepherd in the world and that is Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep(NIV)
Jesus was resurrected as the great Shepherd and He transforms His people to be like Him. He brings his redeemed ones, His sheep, into His image and likeness.
3. He is the Chief Shepherd
1 Peter 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. (NIV)
Reading from verse 1 to verse 4 of 1 Peter chapter 1, it is seen that God has given the pastors and elders of the church small flocks of His sheep to shepherd while here on Earth. And when the Chief Shepherd, Jesus, comes back, He will give the reward.
When the Lord is our Shepherd, we are blessed and have no lack. Our eternity will be with Jesus in His Presence. He is the Good, Great and Chief Shepherd and He will come back for His sheep. Praise the Lord
