The focus word for today is Righteousness.
The focus verse for today is Matthew 6:33 ‘But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.’
Today’s declaration: I pursue the kingdom first, everything I need is added to me by God’s hand.
Righteousness is God’s priority for our lives. In fact, Matthew 6:33 can be considered as a formula. God is telling us that we must seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all the blessings will be added to our lives. God is not asking us to chase security or provisions, but instead to focus on his kingdom and chase his righteousness, which ensures that every other provision that we need will be added into our lives.
At Blessing today we believe in the statement ‘ Get Jesus, get everything’. God always tells us to seek his kingdom and righteousness first and when that happens everything in our lives will fall into the divine order as per the divine timeline. This is my testimony as well. When I ran and chased behind God, he added blessings after blessings in my life. Everything I needed was taken care of, by my Father in heaven. God is not a magician, but a true miracle worker. He does real miracles and I am a walking example of it.
Romans 14:17 says, ‘For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit’
Righteousness is a word that we often come across in the Bible. What is in fact, righteousness as per the Bible? Righteousness is right standing with God. Righteousness is that which is right in the years of the Lord. Righteousness is free and you get it only when you believe in the Lord. When you stand by him and believe in him, this righteousness is passed on to us freely. The moment we depart from the Lord and strays away from him, his righteousness also strays away from us.
Righteousness comes from God and not our earthly works.
2 Corinthians 5:21 says, ‘God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.’
Jesus died for us on the Cross of Calvary. He was blameless and sinless, yet he died for us and paid the price for our sins. Jesus bore our sins and died for us, so that through him we enjoy the righteousness of God. So Jesus took all our sins and died in flesh so that we may be spared from the wrath of God and be made righteous through him.
Romans 3:22 says, ‘This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile’
As stated above, we receive righteousness through our faith in Jesus Christ. In this regard, there is no difference between Jew or Gentile. During the time of Moses, a person was considered righteous in relation to their obedience of the commandments of the Lord. However, this was only applicable to the Jews, as they were bound by the law of the Lord. After the coming of Jesus and his death on cross, where he took all our sins on himself as the sacrificial lamb, this righteousness was also extended to us, the Gentiles. Righteousness is not earned, it’s imparted through Christ. Every other religion advises you to do good things, which eventually brings you righteousness and salvation. But the Bible says that righteousness and salvation is not imparted through your good works, but through your faith in God. It is free and not measured through your good works. For instance, a person infected by leprosy hands you a sweet. Would you take it? You wouldn’t take it. In this instance, the sweet is not the problem, but the man holding the sweet is the issue. In the same way, we are all infected by the sins of the world. Even if we do good on Earth, it does not reduce the infection in us. It continues to remain in us. This is the same thing with righteousness. We are made righteous only through our faith in the Lord Jesus and not through our good deeds. It is only when we are made right with God, does our sins get washed away and his righteousness is imparted to us.
Righteousness produces right living.
Proverbs 21:21 says, ‘Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.’
It is only through righteousness that we can enter into a good life. It is through Godly righteousness that every other blessing will be added into our life.
1 John 2:29 says, ‘If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.’
When we are reborn in Christ, we start doing right things and living right in God’s sight. Righteousness changes how we live, speak and the choices we make. I was a different being before I was saved. When the Holy Spirit came in, my being completely changed. I truly became a new man. The way I thought, the way I behaved was different. Things that seemed important, suddenly became irrelevant and things that seemed irrelevant became significant. I started giving more importance to God, and centered my life around his word and kingdom.
Righteousness brings God’s favour.
Psalm 5:12 says, ‘Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.’
God’s favour is not random. It rests on those who walk uprightly and it all begins with placing your faith in God. It’s like holding an umbrella when it rains. Holding an umbrella does not reduce the intensity of the rain, nor does it stop the rain, but it protects you from the rain. In the same way, when you walk in God’s righteousness, it protects you and God’s favour remains in you, despite the problems around you.
Righteousness exalts and protects. When you are living right by God and man, righteousness exalts and protects. The Cross of Calvary represents this reconciliation. It represents the reconciliation of God and mankind which was brought about by Jesus’ sacrifice.
Proverbs 14:34 says, ‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.’
Isaiah 32:17 says. ‘The fruit of that righteousness will be peace; its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.’
Righteousness brings stability, peace and confidence. Righteousness also brings eternal reward.
2 Timothy 4:8 says, ‘Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.’
Righteousness today produces rewards tomorrow.
