Whisper Praises To God
Yesterday we looked at how to develop individual worship in life.
Worship happens in two settings; individual and corporate. Corporate worship involves more than two people. Beyond this, we need to have an individual worship or a personal worship lifestyle. And this is the focus for this week’s teaching.
Look at the example of David; the commitment he had is visible in Psalm 34.
1 I will extol the Lord at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the Lord;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.
We can see the 3 ways of worship of David clearly depicted in the first 3 verses of this Psalm. For further reference, take a look at Psalm 40.
We should have a personal commitment to worship God regardless of the season we experience in life. Joseph had experienced 4 seasons in his life. In the first season, he lived and enjoyed life as his father's favourite. This season changed once his brothers betrayed him, stole his clothes given to him by his father. Next season showed him living as a slave under Potipher’s rule. From this season, he was taken to the next because of the actions of Potipher’s wife. The next season came with a different outfit which was given to him by the jail warden, and this season was spent in jail. After that, he was given a royal garment by the pharaoh which was not taken or snatched away from his life thereafter.
One major take away from this is that God can change whatever season we are in!
Now let us take a look at how we can do individual worship effectively;
We can whisper praises to God wherever we are, and at all times. It is not only during Sunday worship that we can worship. We can praise him while we work, while we study, while we cook, while we take a bath, all the time! That is practising effective individual worship life.
Acts 2:25-26 says (25) David said about him: “‘I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. (26) Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope
David went through a time where he received threats in his life. He had many enemies even in his own family. He was living in a situation where he could be harmed at any point in time. But regardless of all of this, David says that he will rejoice, his tongue will praise the Lord and his body is resting in hope. David was always going through challenging times. During the time of Solomon, it was a peaceful time where there was prosperity but David being the predecessor did not. He was always in the midst of problems, fights, and so on. But seasons change, generations change. We need to adopt a lifestyle of worship no matter the season.
Hebrews 13:15 says Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.
Our lips become the altar from which sacrifices of praise are offered to the Lord.
(1) The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
(2) Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
(3) They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
(4) Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
(5) It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
(6) It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.
