Fresh Oil
Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Here, the Shepherd is revealed as the anointing-giver. In Biblical times, shepherds anointed their sheep’s heads with oil to protect them from insects that would burrow into their ears and cause diseases, to treat injuries and prevent infections. Similarly, the Chief Shepherd anoints our heads with oil to protect us from evil spirits. When you have the anointing oil all over you, you become slippery and escape the grip of the enemy.
The shepherd anoints the sheep with fresh oil. He anoints us with fresh oil in order to protect, heal and empower. We need to understand the power of fresh oil! You can have multiple experiences of the anointing and the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
God's anointing in our lives serves as a spiritual covering and we will be protected from harm and we will be healed from all the wounds and we will be empowered to fulfill His calling.
The purpose of God’s anointing upon our lives:
1. Anointing for healing - God's anointing brings physical, emotional and spiritual healing. His presence restores the weary and binds up the broken-hearted.
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
2. Anointing for protection - Anointing is for equipping you to do a new task. Just as oil protected the sheep, God’s anointing shield us from harm and the schemes of the enemy.
Psalm 105:15 “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”
3. Anointing for power and purpose - The anointing isn’t just a protection, it is power for our calling. When God anoints us, He equips us to preach, teach, lead and serve with divine strength.
Luke 4:16-21 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
4. Anointing that remains - God’s anointing is not temporary, it is an ongoing presence in our lives, guiding us daily. God doesn’t want us to live on yesterday's anointing. We need to walk in the fresh oil daily.
1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Shout out loud: I am anointed, I am protected and overflowing with God's blessings. Hallelujah!
