Overflowing With Blessings
Over the past two weeks we have been focusing and meditating on the Lord being our shepherd (Psalms 23).
As we confess the truth that the Lord is our shepherd and we have all that we need, we can trust that it can make a difference in our lives. The reason we can trust that it is true is because the author of this Psalm, David, wrote it while he was a shepherd tending to his sheep. During the time that the Psalm was written, David hadn’t experienced the majority of what is written in Psalm 23. Even though he hadn’t experienced it, he wrote the Psalm confessing what he would like to see in his future. Eventually we see that everything that he had written had come to pass in his life. Therefore, when we also confess these truths, even when we don’t see it in our lives, it will come to pass.
Psalm 24:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil my cup overflows.(NIV)
Today we will be looking at the second part of Psalms 23 verse 5 that says “My cup overflows”. The Lord is my shepherd, my cup overflows.
In his sermon during a Christian leader’s conference, John Osteen, mentions about what is written in verse 5 of Psalm 23 regarding ‘my cup overflows’. He said that whatever is inside the cup belongs to the owner of the cup and whatever is overflowing from the cup is to bless others.
What is a cup?
There are multiple things that can be considered as a cup.
1. Heart
Psalm 45:1 My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like a pen of a ready scribe. (ESV)
The heart can be a cup. It can be filled and overflowing with the word of God.
2. Abdomen
Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. (NIV)
The abdomen can be a cup. It can be filled and overflowing with the Spirit.
John 7:37-38 In the last day, the great day of the feast,Jesus stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” (KJV)
Rivers of living water, the Spirit, flows from the belly of a person who believes in Jesus and comes thirsty to Him.
When you declare that the Lord is your shepherd and you believe it in faith, the Bible says that your cup will overflow. It means that anything that is lacking or in scarcity, be it your heart or your spirit or any material things, will overflow when the Lord is your shepherd.
Truths about God that you should believe:
1. He is not a God of scarcity
2. He is not a God of negativity
3. He is not a God of lack
4. He is a God of abundance
5. He is a God of surplus
6. He is a God of overflow
God is a generous God who gives freely and willingly. He is not stingy in giving and gives far more than what we ask or can imagine.
Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us (NIV)
We have a God who is capable of giving us far more than what we can ask him to give us. He can work beyond our expectations according to His power. Abraham asked God for an offspring but God told him that He will give Abraham as many descendants as the stars in the sky.
Our God is a God of abundance. He gives more than enough; He gives everything in an overflow. When David wrote the verse in Psalms 23, he was painting a picture of God’s extravagant generosity.
1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (NIV)
God the Father has lavished His love upon us. Even when we were not deserving of His love, when we should have been hated or been on the receiving end of His wrath, He was merciful towards us and lavished His love upon us. This great and merciful God is our shepherd.
The overflowing cup symbolizes blessings beyond measure; blessings that cannot be measured by us. As previously mentioned, when David wrote this psalm, he was a young lad who was taking care of his father’s sheep. He had nothing of his own except what he carried with him while he was shepherding the flock. So, when he writes that his cup will overflow, he was envisioning how the future will be with God being his shepherd.
As a shepherd, David didn’t ration the water that he gave his flocks to drink. In fact, he made sure that his flock had enough and more water to quench their thirst. This was what he, David, foresaw when he wrote that his cup will overflow when the God who created the whole universe is his shepherd. As we read the rest of David’s story in the Bible, we see that all that he had envisioned had come to pass. He became the king of Israel and Judah and was blessed abundantly.
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (NIV)
Luke 6:38 Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (NIV)
When you give towards the Lord’s work, He will bless you abundantly. You’ll be blessed with more than what you have given.
In conclusion, from Psalm 23 verse 5, it is clear that when the Lord is your shepherd, your cup will overflow. You will be blessed to be a blessing to many others.
