Misunderstandings About Divine Prosperity
God is a Spirit (John 4:24 says, ‘God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”)
We live in a material world, but we are primarily spirit beings. Here are a few verses that are focused on this.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 says, ‘May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.’
Hebrews 4:12 says, ‘For the word of God is alive and active.Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’
In Genesis 1.26,27, we read that we are created in God’s image and likeness, which shows that we are spirit beings like Him.
Genesis 2:7 says, ‘Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.’
When God's breath entered into the man that he created from dust, he came to life ( a spirit being) and also received a soul in the process. We are created in the likeness of God and we possess this similarity with our creator in our spirit and soul. God is immortal and is a Spirit.
We are spirit beings, but while we live on earth, in this three dimensional world, we are physical beings who require certain materialistic things to live. Our bodies are created from the elements that lie within the depths of this three dimensional world. As long as we live in this material world, we require certain material resources/possessions. So essentially we have a physical body which requires us to have materialistic things.
At the same time, we are spirit beings and our spirit craves for things of the spiritual world and our soul comprises mind, will and emotions. We have a trichotomy and we are tripartite beings.
How can we live in divine prosperity?
Many believe that living in poverty and living in denial is the Godly or Christian way to live. It is seen as a sign of spiritual living as many see Jesus as one who lived in poverty, without a place to rest and that His disciples followed that, hence by extension many believe that a simple life is the Christian way to live.
But when we study the Word, we know that Jesus was wearing a very costly dress, it was seamless from top to toe. The clothes that we wear are normally pieces that are stitched together. Jesus’s clothes were seamless and not patched up which makes them very expensive and time consuming to make. This is why Roman soldiers did not tear his clothes, instead they put a lot to get a hold on them instead. While many believe that Jesus was poor and on account of his poverty he slept on open fields and lawns, there are no scriptures to validate these.
Luke 8: 1-3 says, ‘After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.’
There were several rich benefactors who accompanied Jesus. In fact there were people who sold off their assets to support Jesus’s ministry. It is also written in the scriptures that Judas Iscariot used to take money from Jesus’s treasury which clearly means that there was plenty of financial aid coming in.
Jesus had plenty of financial resources to support his ministry and whatever he didn’t, Father God provided. Instances include, multiplying five loaves of bread and fish, miraculously filling up jars of wine and such. There is no place in the Bible where it is mentioned that Jesus was poor and was starved. In fact people nicknamed Jesus as the ‘drinker and eater’. Jesus was a social Jesus who mingled with sinners.
Psalm 1:1-3 says, ‘1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.’
The person as described above, will yield their fruit in season, their leaves will not wither and what they do prospers. There is a divine prosperity about such people. There is a divine prosperity and blessing in everything that they do.
Joshua 1:8 says, ‘Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.’
There is a Godly prosperity that is prevalent. In the following days, we will talk about how we can receive divine prosperity in our lives.
