God Remembers His Covenant
God’s standard is much higher than human beings but many times He comes down to our level. God came down from Heaven in the form of man to relate to us. He communicates to us in a way we can understand Him. God speaks to us through imageries and relationships. For example, relationships between bride and bridegroom, between two friends, a shepherd and sheep etc.
God relates to us through these relationships. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Bridegroom and the church is the bride and How he loves the church the way a bridegroom (husband) would love His bride (wife).
In John 10 and Psalm 23, we read about the Shepherd -sheep relationship: the way God takes care of us, protects us, provides for us etc the way a Shepherd does of His sheep.
In John 15. 15, Jesus said, “ I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”. This is the analogy of the love between two friends.
In all these, we see a God whose thoughts and ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55.8-9) trying to communicate to us from our level.
Another way God speaks to us is through covenants. God always remembers His covenants. In the Eastern world, Covenant was a token of remembrance between deep relationships.
Rainbow is one such token of remembrance between God and Noah.
Genesis 9.13 -16 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
Animal sacrifices were another way of establishing covenants.
In the Book of Joshua chapter 4, God tells Joshua to set up twelve stones as a remembrance to all generations that Lord their God had dried up the River Jordan for them to cross over.
Joshua 5. 21-24 He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’ For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God. ”
Passover was yet another token of remembrance of God’s covenant for the Israelites to remember how God delivered them from 430 years of slavery from Egypt. This was substituted when our Passover Lamb Jesus Christ was crucified once and forever. In the New Testament, we observe the “Lord’s Supper’ as a remembrance of what Jesus has done for us.
As Psalm 103.2 says, “Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—”. It is human tendency to forget the benefits God has done for us. God never forgets us nor does He forsake us. He has engraved us in the palm of His hands.
Genesis 9. 15-16 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
Whenever we see a rainbow, it is for God and us to remember His Covenant. God created this scientific phenomenon that when a light passes through a prism it refracts into seven colours. This is based on God’s covenant to Noah that He will never destroy the earth by floods.
God’s covenant to the Patriarchs is seen in Leviticus 26.42,45 I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 45 But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the LORD.’”
Psalm 105 describes the wonders and miracles God did in the lives of Israelites as He delivered them from Egypt.
Verse 8-10 He remembers his covenant forever, the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
God never forgets the covenants He made though the people to whom He made them were no more.
Ezekiel 16.60 Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.
Although many forget the covenant they made with God in their younger age, God doesn't forget it. He will never forsake them. He will bring them back to Him and bless them.
Luke 1.72 to show mercy to our ancestors and to remember his holy covenant,
Blood Covenant is God’s everlasting sign of covenant to His people that He will always remember us.
Hebrews 13.20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep.
