Is God Really Good?

Mark 10:18 says, ‘“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.’

Back when I started my Ministry in 1994, during my first few sessions, only a handful of people attended these. One Sunday, during one of the sessions, I had encouraged people to share their testimonies. One man stood up a bible and said he’s been a believer for a few years and during these years, I’ve had nothing but problems, sufferings, pain and hurt in my life. The man cried out while saying that God has not done anything good in his life. Hearing this I was flustered and many new people had come to attend the session. I made that man forcefully sit down. Later, when I spoke to that man, I realized one of the primary issues at his home was that marriages were not taking place. Hence, he was insulted by many and hurt when they told him that his siblings were not married due to the faith that he was in.
 
When I heard that, I was deeply motivated to pray and ensure that things in that household would change. I declared every Sunday, we would pray for the needs of others while writing them down in a notebook. People would come in, let the group know of the needs and the whole congregation would pray. Soon, what I realized was that the column we had left to include the date when the prayer is answered was getting filled. After starting this practice, the marriage of all the 3 siblings of that man, took place within the next few months. Like I said last time, we have to do what we have to and God will do what he needs to. Often we expect God to play our part as well and expect a miracle. When that miracle or blessing does not manifest in our lives, we often become defiant and disheartened.
 
The same man, who cried out about the pain and hurt in his life started declaring the goodness of God in his life. During this time, when I was praying for others, my sister's wedding also took place. God is good. If you walk the righteous path, walk in his goodness while relying and praying to him, you will be able to live through the goodness of God. The goodness of God, is in fact the foundation of everything. Will you call unto God, if he is not good?
 
In essence, as a person, God is good. His actions and deeds are good. We see his goodness in the creation in Genesis 1.  Understanding this principle or truth is essential to be founded in our faith life and drive our lives ahead.  
 
James 1:17 says, ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’
 
Every perfect gift that we have received from our lives is from God. A person with bad intentions will never be able to deliver goodness, but a good person with good intention, exudes goodness. Since God is good, everything from him is good. It is essential that we engrave this truth in our hearts and minds.
 
Jesus, our Saviour is a gift from the good Father. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. The Spiritual and Charismatic gifts that we receive are also good gifts from God. The oxygen we breathe, water we drink, the bed we lay on, the house we rest in, are all good gifts from God. However, since there are negative thoughts that reside within us, we often overlook these blessings. We often compare our circumstances and crave for the life of another, which is where we falter. The essence of today’s message is that;

• Everything we have today is from God.
• God is the Father of Lights, hence there is no darkness or evil or viciousness in God
• God is unchanging and does not change as shadows do

 
Understand that there is only goodness in God.
 
1 Corinthians 15:33-34 says, ‘33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” 34 Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.’
 
God is good and this foundational truth must be engraved within your hearts. In our lives, there are good and bad things - which is often the belief that we live by. However, that is not the truth, the bad and evil things that happen to us, are not from our God.
