Why Did Jesus Curse The Fig Tree?
This is a season changing time in our spiritual lives. Last week we focused on how to develop radical faith. We see this radical faith in many characters in the Bible, where their faith was uncommon and fierce. Even when things seemed to go wary, they clung on to their faith fiercely and believed in the Lord, despite their circumstances. Many things that God did through these characters changed the course of history and he will do the same with you. This is a season of elevation and exaltation in your life. The direction of the righteous man is upwards indicating growth and prosperity in life, closer to the abode of our Father in heaven.
How did the Jericho walls fall? The wall fell through the faith of the people. So stay strong in faith at all times.
Today we will focus on - Why did Jesus curse the fig tree? What did Jesus see in this situation? What lesson can we learn from this and apply in our daily life ? Let’s dwell on this subject today.
Mark 11:12-14 says, ‘12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.’
Mark 11:19-21 says, ‘19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city. 20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
It was quite strange for Jesus to curse a tree for not bearing fruit especially when it was not the season for fruit bearing. But if Jesus did something, there is always a reason behind it; one that we can follow and obey.
Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?
God created fruit trees in such a way that when leaves grow from it, soon after it they also bear fruit. Hence if it’s not the season for a fig tree to bear fruit, then it is also not its season to grow leaves. However, for this fig tree, there were leaves, but no fruits. Several theologians call this fig tree a hypocrite. As it acts like a hypocrite, creating the perception that it bears fruits, but in reality it does not. God curses situations and people who pretend to bear fruit, and create a wrongful external perception of themselves.
John 15:6 says, ‘6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned’
God has planted us in this world, to be fruitful. If we are only a little fruitful then we are pruned to bear more fruit. However if it does not bear any fruit, then it is cursed. Everything is created for a purpose and anything or anybody who does not succeed in their purpose, by default is surely cursed. If we are not bearing fruit for our God, then there is surely a curse upon us.
To know if a person is fruitful all we need to do is look at their words and their deeds.
Ephesians 2.10
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
A person is known by his / her fruits and God has created us to bear fruits.
Psalms 1:3 says, ‘3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.’
2 Timothy 4:2 says, ‘Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction’
For a child of God, there is no season and off-season. We must always be prepared. We must be watchful of ourselves and prepared for the Lord to come any day now. Just as it is narrated in Matthew chapter 25, the 5 virgins were waiting on the Lord with oil burning their lamps. Whereas the other 5 were not prepared. All of them knew that the bridegroom would come though they did know the exact time. Every believer must be ready and prepared in the Word and also encouraging others in the Word.
There is another twist in the curse of the fig tree. In the book of Mark, it is said that the next day when the disciples saw the fig tree it had withered away. However in the book of Matthew, it is said that Jesus cursed the fig tree and it withered away immediately. I urge you to think about this. We will take this forward tomorrow.
