How Did The Jericho Wall Fall?
What is the wall, the barrier standing between your dreams, your promises?
Joshua 6:1-5
Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. 2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
When God gives us a promise, it is our responsibility to take hold of that promise.
God told Joshua that He has given him the town of Jericho. This means it is already his, he just has to go and take possession of it.
Vs 3
God is giving Joshua the strategy to capture Jericho. God told Joshua to march around the walls once, with all the armed men for six days. This strategy had not been used anywhere else before or after this. On the seventh day, they had to march seven times.
1) Hold onto the promises of God
The Israelites didn’t have fancy weapons to break the wall. They held onto the promise of God that Jericho is theirs.
Right from Genesis, Abraham received promises from God regarding his generations. The Israelites had a heap of promises and they held onto them.
If you are in the midst of turmoil and obstacles, hold fast unto the promises of God.
2) The power of repetition
God told the Israelites to walk around the wall for six days. There is a power in repetition. Praying repeatedly, praising repeatedly, calling out the promises repeatedly. There is a power in it. Claim it repeatedly. Confess it repeatedly.
They were commanded to walk without speaking. If they were to speak, negative chatter would arise. But they were ordered to walk quietly.
God promised Abraham that the place where he steps his foot would be his and so the Israelites were told to tread upon the promised land. They were carrying the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark symbolizes the presence of God. We must live, walk and move in the presence of God. We must call out our promises in the presence of God. On the seventh day they were to cry the shout of victory. They shouted a cry of victory, not a war cry but a shout of victory. We are not fighting for victory but we are fighting from victory. We are already victors. In the case of the Israelites, God told them the land is theirs. All they had to do is believe the promise, walk around it and shout a cry of victory.
Still, how did this great wall fall, you might ask?
Hebrews 11:30
By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.
By faith, the walls of Jericho fell.
When you have extraordinary faith in God, a supernatural activity will be revealed. When you have radical faith, God will work supernatural miracles for you, far beyond the earthly realm.
Acts 16:22-26
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods. 23 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24 When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. 25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.
When Paul and Silas were singing and praising God, there was an earthquake and the foundations shook. The Apostles were bound in chains and yet praised God powerfully. There is power in praise, there is power in prayer.
