The Principle Of Accountability
The natural or carnal man feeds on physical bread while the spiritual man feeds on spiritual bread which is the Word of God.
We have been discussing the principles of divine prosperity from Ecclesiastes Chapter 11, how God desires that we prosper in all areas. There is no lack/scarcity/recession etc in heaven; there is always ample supply and as long as we are connected to heaven, we will have no lack.
In Ecclesiastes 11:9-10, we will learn the eighth principle; the principle of accountability.
Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh, For childhood and youth are vanity.
Although the complete revelation was not available in the Old Testament times, those who walked with God knew that there was a judgment. Everyone however, knew that there has been death since the first man.
Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment
The revelation of judgment was limited in the Old but received clarity through Jesus and the teachings of the Apostles. This is called the “ Law of Accountability”.
We are accountable in various areas and ways both in the secular and spiritual. In Ecclesiastes 11:9-10, King Solomon was warning that there is a time of judgment where each person will be held accountable.
This includes financial accountability and integrity. Just as in the secular field where we settle accounts, there is a divine accountability we need to have before God. Though many feel that because God is forgiving, we can do anything but all of us must appear before God’s judgment seat.
2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad
“What did you do with what I entrusted you with?” This is a question that Jesus will ask each one of us one day.
This is explained in the parable Jesus spoke in Luke 19.12-27; where a principle is taught through it.
A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Do business till I come.’ But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’ When this man came back as King, he called them to give an account. Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ And he said to him, Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.
Actually, this was a test. The King entrusted the man who multiplied much by making him a ruler over ten cities as he proved his faithfulness and managerial capacities. The second who had capacity to earn only five more was given rulership over five cities.
20 “Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. 21 I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ The King judged him according to his own words; you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow? 23 Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?24 “Then he said to those standing by, ‘Take his mina away from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’ 25 “‘Sir,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’ 26 “He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what they have will be taken away.
Those who do not multiply what is given to them will ultimately lose everything.
27 But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”
The context was based on the Jews not receiving Jesus as King. It also means that when Jesus comes back the second time, there will be an account settling of all the talents, gifts etc that He has invested in us.
In the context of finances, King Jesus expects us to multiply it when He comes to settle accounts. This is the truth, and we must apply this principle of accountability in our lives.
