Lingering In God's Presence
Exodus 33:9-11
‘As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent. The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.’
Joshua was Moses’ assistant. Wherever Moses went Joshua would follow. If Moses needed to meet God, Joshua would go with him. Whenever Moses had a meeting with the elders Joshua too would go with him.
Have you heard of the concept called PA or Personal Assistant?
Joshua was Moses’ PA.
One day Moses had an appointment with God. Moses has a face to face conversation with God. Like a man would speak to his friend God was speaking with Moses. Now Joshua did not have an appointment with God. So he stood at a distance from Moses. And when Moses was witnessing God’s glory, Joshua too was witnessing the glory of God.
Moses had an appointment with God and after he spoke with God he returned to the camp. Joshua although he did not have an appointment with God, because of his longing to witness God’s glory he did not return to the camp with Moses.
Exodus 33:11
‘The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.’
Who longed for God’s presence more? Who longed to see the glory of God? Who was desperate for God’s presence?
Joshua did not remain in the tent because he was an assistant to Moses but because he longed to witness the glory of God.
Moses had access to the full course meal. He was seated at the table. Joshua was present to pick up the crumbs that fell from the table. Nevertheless Joshua valued the crumbs. He stayed because he was hungry for more of the Lord.
Mark 7:24-30
‘Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs. ”“Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs. ”Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter. ”She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.’
In the verses above we find the woman begging Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus replied to her saying that His purpose was first to the Israelites and then to the gentiles. Jesus goes on saying that He cannot give the crumbs to the dogs first. The children need to eat all they want.
Jesus is referring to this woman as a dog. In the Hebrew translation here the dog is referred to as the pet dog and not stray dog. This woman was not offended when Jesus referred to her as a dog instead she replied, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.
The woman was ready to receive whatever fell from the table. Because she knew that even if it was just crumbs, it carried great healing. Hallelujah!!!
Some people are offended by certain things happening at church. They have issues with their brother or sister in Christ. This woman did not care what her label was; she wanted the crumbs. Joshua wanted the crumbs. Joshua received Moses' leftover but He did not mind. He was hungry for the crumbs.
What are you doing with these crumbs? Are you hungry for more? Are you making the most out of what God has given you?
What are you doing with the access to God’s presence?
