Anxiety Disorder - 1
Anxiety is a very common disorder these days. It is related to our mind (thoughts) and includes three topics : anxiety, fear, and panic.
Anxiety is the fear of future; it is not focused on a specific issue but is vague. It worries about the future.
In the Bible, we see that Jesus strongly teaches about anxiety.
Matthew 6:25-34 talks about worry. Jesus knows that this is one of our biggest problems and He reassures us that God will take care of all things when we pursue Him first instead.
Matthew 6:25
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
“Do not worry” is a commandment of God. Jesus offers an anxiety/ worry free life. God has given us the mind of Christ which is stress free, restful, peaceful etc. This is included in God’s salvation package to us.
1 Corinthians 2.16 says But we have the mind of Christ.
Those who have the mind of Christ are not allowed to worry. This is God’s command.
Matthew 6.26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
If God can take care of the birds, how much more will He be faithful to take care of us.
If we give first priority to Jesus and trust in Him, we can rest assured that He will completely take care of us.
Matthew 6:33
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Our God is faithful. Apostle Paul also writes about it in Philippians 4:6-8
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Even before we receive answers to our prayers, we will receive a divine peace. Our thoughts must change! Instead of focusing on issues that bring us worry, we must think about all things good.
In Luke 10, we see Martha worrying about how to serve Jesus and her other guests.
Luke 10:40-42 “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Martha was totally upset and distracted about all the work she had to do and complained about it to Jesus. Preparing food for them was not the issue but she had an anxious and complaining nature. This was not a one time issue in her life. She should be willing to find the root cause and be able to solve it.
While Martha worried about feeding Jesus, Mary sat ( shows rest) with Jesus and waited for him to feed her. Like Mary, our focus should be on Jesus and His Kingdom. Our God will provide all our needs when we seek Him. If Martha had not complained, she would have received an angelic intervention to help her. If we trust God to provide instead of worrying, we will receive miracles.
We know about the multiplication of the five loaves and two fish when the disciples were working about feeding the multitude. This can still happen today. God will always provide us with what we need. God invites us to a worry free life:
Jesus said in Matthew 6. 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We must stop worrying and trust god to take care of us.
Mathew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Jesus doesn’t want us to carry yesterday’s and tomorrow’s burdens. We must live each day trusting the Lord and doing our daily responsibilities , then our past will not haunt us and our future will not be fearful.
As long as God is on the throne, we can rest in Him. We must know that whatever we have belongs to the lord and he will take care of it .
