What is Worship?
A lot of people are confounded with the question of ‘How to Worship God?’ The minute we bring up the topic of worship people automatically think it's to do with songs and clapping your hands and waving them up in the air. But that’s not always the case.
It is important to lay down the foundations of faith. And if you lack this foundation, you are bound to stagger. The Father desires that all should worship him.
John 4:23 says, ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.’
Worshiping God is one of the primary responsibilities of the heavenly beings and the earthly beings. In fact the main purpose of God delivering the people of Israel from Egypt is to worship him.
Exodus 7:16 says, ‘Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness.
But until now you have not listened. God saved us so that we could worship him. God saved us from the hands of the devil, the religious clutches of tradition so that we could worship him.
1 Peter 2:9 says, ‘But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.’
When God came down to Earth he created a demarcation between the New and the Old Testament. Jesus made the Old obsolete and when doing so he even changed the style of worship. He broke and shattered the Old and brought in a style of worship altogether. Jesus changed the whole idea of worship. Till that time people had specific holy places to go pray. They prayed and worshipped in these main designated worship areas.
John 4:21 says, ‘ “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.’
John 4:23 says, ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.’
Take a decision today to be a true worshipper in Christ. In the New Testament every ministry is by the Spirit and not by hands.
2 Corinthians 3:6 says, ‘He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.’
In the Old Testament, the worship was led by the high priests and the ministers where worship itself focused on sacrifice. These sacrifices often involved tying up cattle of the best kind, and skinning them to sacrifice them at the altar. So even among the priests only those who are strong and without any disabilities were recruited to the task. Only those with a well built body were tasked with these sacrifices. Hence a lot of ministry and worship was done by hands.
However, when you come to 2 Corinthians 3:6 there is a shift where it is no longer by hands that you praise and worship but by the Spirit. The focus from then on was a ministry by the Spirit.
The true worship in the New Testament is worship in Spirit and truth. John 4:23-24 says, ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
It is written that true worship is done in Spirit and truth. Worship is not just an event but a lifestyle just like your prayer life. It is not a ritualistic task but truly a lifestyle of praising God. Anything we do must be to praise the Lord. Life itself becomes a worship when the aim, purpose and motto of our life revolves around worship to exalt God.
True worship will bring down the ambience of heaven into our hearts and among our midst. When you worship as a group the heavens and the heavenly portals just open before you and reside in our midst. The scriptures give us a glimpse into how the heavenly beings praise the Lord. A similar effect is created when we praise together and worship the Master in Spirit and truth.
Philippians 3:3 says, ‘For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—‘
It is only those who worship in Spirit who are true worshippers of God. Worship is often understood as a sacrifice or a ritualistic presentation before God or even singing songs and music. While they can all be a part of worship, it is not worship in its truest form. Worship is in the Spirit realm.
