The Gift Of The Living Water
James 1:17 says, ‘Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.’
2 Corinthians 9:15
‘Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!’
We must live a life of gratefulness. We may not have received this or that, but the blessings that we have received are so bountiful that we must have a thankful heart. Even the air we breathe, the body we live in, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the relationships we have, are all blessings from above. These universal gifts are poured to the bad and the good of the world including the believers and atheists, who often profusely disagree with the existence of God while breathing the air he provided us. However, the biggest and best gift that God the Father gave us is Jesus. The salvation that we receive through Jesus as a free gift is the close second.
What is the third indescribable gift that the father gives us ?
John 4:10-14 says, ‘Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”’
Jesus was talking alone to a lady who was not Jewish, at noon time. His disciples had gone to get food. Jesus asked her two questions: 1) If you knew the gift of God? (2) If you knew who was asking you for a drink?.
If she knew the answer to these two questions, she would ask Him for living water which would quench her spiritual thirst.
It’s important to understand the setting of the scripture portion above. Samaria was a place that was never a preferred travelled location, even by Jesus’ disciples. However, Jesus travelled to Samaria because that city was ready for a great revelation. As you read on you will also see that during Jesus' time, the people of Samaria declared that you are not just the God of the Jews but the saviour of the world.
There are so many people in this world, who've probably not heard about Christ, there are so many others who know of Him as a teacher of the Christians or as a mere prophet. There are others who negatively portray Him as well.
In the scripture portion above, Jesus tells the Samaritan woman, ‘only if you knew the gift of God…then you would have asked him and he would have given you the living water.’ We get thirsty so many times a day and take care of our physical thirst. In the same way we also have a spiritual thirst. Our spirit also feels thirsty and hungry. For many, their spirit might be dead and in that state they don’t realise that there is a spiritual hunger within their soul. It is important to quench this hunger and it is this gift that the scripture portion above refers to, which is the living waters.
The Samaritan woman responds to Jesus’ claim, where she assumes He is talking about the physical water in the well. The Samaritans depended on Jacob’s well to satisfy their physical thirst. Jesus responds by saying that anyone who drinks water from this well will be thirsty again, but anyone who drinks the water from Jesus, who is the living water, will never be thirsty again. Here Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit. This is one of the greatest gifts our Father from heaven has poured out to us. Now, the question is, have you accepted this Holy Spirit into your life?
