Why Does God Allow Evil?
The God that the Bible reveals is good; in Him there’s no sin/ evil/ darkness or corruption. Nothing evil originates from God. But when we look around in the world and notice all that’s happening - innocent people being persecuted/killed, poverty, starvation, wars, natural calamities; our human minds raise a question - ‘Why does God allow this to happen?’/ ‘Why doesn’t God intervene with this evil world?’
What does the Bible tell us about this ?
Genesis 2:16-17
And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
There were nearly 2500 species of fruit trees, the first man was a fruitarian; but God had forbidden them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God is not the creator of evil. It’s the archangel, Lucifer (light- bringer) along with a group of angels who rebelled against God and fell from their functional position. It was in Lucifer that evil originated first and it isn’t God who created/allowed evil. Lucifer, on his own will, chose to do evil which led to sin. Satan tempted Eve through the serpent and caused her to fall into sin.
Isaiah 14:12-15
How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the realm of the dead, to the depths of the pit.
James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
All these verses may be familiar to you, but in the course of life, there’s a propensity for us to consider God to be cruel. That’s Satan’s big trick.
Genesis 3:1-5
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ""You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
The serpent questioned the word of God - ‘did God really mean it that way?’ Satan distorted the word of God and caused Eve to fall into sin. Eve was already created in the likeness of God, but Satan deceived her by saying that she will be like God once she ate from that tree. That was the entry point of evil into this world; before that there was no pain, illness, sorrow, depression, death, famine/recession. They were living in paradise!
The goodness of God is always questioned. Is Jesus the only Way? Is baptism really needed? Do we really need the help of the Holy Spirit? Is Heaven/ Hell real? Such thoughts creep in, but God had meant it.
Psalm 103:1-2
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits
There’s power in your praise and thanksgiving! But we’re often driven to focus on what we don’t have and worry about it rather than committing our hearts to God and thank Him for the blessings He’s already showered upon us. Shout out and declare, ‘My God is Good’ and tear down the lies and works of the enemy!
